Hanoi in Vietnam, has always captivated me. I’ve visited three times, and every time I’m drawn in by the unique mix of tradition and modernity, the colorful chaos of the streets, and the warmth of the people. A longtime friend of mine lives here, so I always have the perfect excuse to return. In this blog, I want to share my experiences and give you some tips on the must-see highlights of Hanoi.
Arrival and First Impressions: Hotel de l’Opera Hanoi
For my first two visits, I stayed at the Hotel de l’Opera Hanoi—and what a great start that was! The hotel is centrally located, making it perfect for exploring the city on foot. I highly recommend this hotel for its friendly staff, comfortable rooms, and especially the incredibly soft beds, which are a blessing after a long day in the city.

On my first day, I ventured out on foot to explore the area, and a stroll around the Hoan Kiem Lake—just a short walk from the hotel—was the perfect introduction to the city. The lake is a peaceful oasis amidst the lively streets of Hanoi, offering a quiet retreat. One key tip: when crossing the streets in Hanoi, don’t wait for the traffic to stop—it won’t! Just walk steadily, and the scooters and cars will swerve around you. Just check the Video from the Hanoi Traffic here.
A Day of Sightseeing: Temples, Pagodas, and History
The following day, I booked a driver through the hotel to take me around Hanoi’s top sights. The Temple of Literature and the Tran Quoc Pagoda were two of my favorites. The Temple of Literature is Vietnam’s oldest university and a beautiful tribute to Confucius and the country’s scholarly traditions. The Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hanoi’s oldest pagoda, sits peacefully surrounded by water, making it a serene spot for reflection.

Another highlight was the Vietnam Military History Museum, which provides a deep dive into Vietnam’s perspective on the Vietnam War. The exhibits, including tanks and fighter jets, really bring history to life. If you’re a history buff, this museum is a must-visit.

Evening Cocktails at Angelina Bar
After a full day of exploring the city, I decided to unwind with some drinks at the Angelina Bar, one of my favorite spots in Hanoi. This upscale bar offers a stylish atmosphere and some of the best cocktails in town. The ambiance is chic and modern, with great music and a sophisticated vibe. The cocktails, although pricier than other places in the city, are well worth it for the quality and experience. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a refined evening out in Hanoi, I highly recommend stopping by Angelina. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cocktail or something more inventive, they’ve got you covered.

Vietnamese Coffee Culture and the Train Street Experience
No trip to Hanoi would be complete without visiting the famous Train Street. This narrow street has a train track running right through it, so close to the houses that you could almost touch the train as it passes. Make sure to check the train schedule in advance, as it doesn’t run frequently (watch the Video here).
While waiting, I treated myself to a delicious Egg Coffee—a sweet and creamy treat that’s a must-try in Vietnam.

Vietnam has, in my opinion, the best coffee culture I’ve encountered so far. Whether it’s Egg Coffee, Yogurt Coffee, or the classic Ca Phe Sua Da (iced coffee with condensed milk), there’s always something new to try. One thing to note: coffee is often served cold in Vietnam, so if you prefer it hot, make sure to specify when ordering.
Culinary Experiences and Weekend Fun at Hoan Kiem Lake
When it comes to food, one dish you absolutely have to try is Pho, the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. This flavorful and comforting dish is the perfect choice for lunch, even on a hot day.
In the afternoons, I like to unwind by Hoan Kiem Lake, my favorite spot in Hanoi. Did you know that the streets around the lake are closed to traffic on weekends? This transforms the area into a vibrant hub where locals gather to relax, socialize, and engage in various activities. One of the most interesting things to watch is Đá cầu, or foot badminton—a popular Vietnamese sport where players use their feet to keep a shuttlecock in the air. It’s impressive to watch the locals play with such skill!
The atmosphere around the lake, especially in the evenings, is fantastic, with people dancing, playing games, or just enjoying time with friends and family. If you’re in Hanoi over a weekend, this is definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss.

Oceanpark District: A Glimpse of Hanoi’s Future
During my last trip, I stayed for four weeks in the Oceanpark District, a futuristic, newly built area of Hanoi where my friend lives. It feels like a city within a city, offering everything from schools and universities to restaurants, hospitals, and even a man-made lagoon. One cool feature is the free e-buses that operate within the district, making it easy to get around. With its high-rise buildings and luxurious villas, Oceanpark feels like a glimpse into Hanoi’s modern future. There are several other similar districts being developed around the city, and it’s fascinating to see how fast things are changing here.

Hanoi – A City of Contrasts
What I love most about Hanoi is its incredible diversity. The city is chaotic and fast-paced, but at the same time, there are moments of calm and serenity. The people are warm and welcoming, the food is delicious, and the culture is rich and fascinating. Hanoi is constantly evolving, and I can’t wait to return and see what’s new.
If you’re planning a trip to Southeast Asia, be sure to add Hanoi to your itinerary. Whether you’re wandering through the bustling Old Quarter, exploring the city’s historical landmarks, or just enjoying a cup of coffee by the lake, this city offers something for everyone.
