From Hanoi to Sapa

A Journey of Adventure, Mishaps, and Unforgettable Hospitality

My journey from Hanoi to Sapa was supposed to be one filled with adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and the thrill of trekking through Vietnam’s northern highlands. In some ways, it was exactly that—though not quite as planned. Let me take you through the highs and lows of my trip, starting with the overnight bus ride and ending with a twist that turned my adventure into an unexpected stay at one of the best hotels I’ve ever experienced.

The Overnight Bus Experience

I booked my bus ride from Hanoi to Sapa through 12go.asia, which I highly recommend if you’re traveling by bus or train in Vietnam. They offer a super convenient booking platform, and I had no trouble finding the perfect ride for my schedule. The bus itself was a sleeper bus, and I have to say, it was quite the experience. Picture this: a cozy little cabin with a bed and a personal TV, all in a moving bus! This was my first time traveling in such comfort on wheels, and it was surprisingly relaxing. I settled in, watched a movie, and dozed off to the hum of the engine as we journeyed through the Vietnamese countryside.

By 4 a.m., I arrived in Sapa, a bit groggy but excited. The town was still asleep, but I was immediately greeted by several local guides offering trekking tours. Before I knew it, I had agreed to a full-day trekking tour that very day—maybe a little impulsive, but when in Sapa, right?

Welcome to Hotel de la Coupole

Before heading off on the trek, I checked into my hotel—Hotel de la Coupole. Despite the early hour, the staff was incredibly kind and allowed me an early check-in. This was a blessing, as I desperately needed a shower and a bit of rest before embarking on my trek. The hotel itself is stunning, with a charming French-Indochina design that made me feel like I had stepped into a different era. The staff welcomed me warmly, and after a quick refresh, I was ready to take on the mountains.

Trekking Through Sapa: Beauty and Bruises

The trekking began smoothly, and the natural beauty surrounding Sapa is beyond words. We ventured up and down steep paths, passing rice terraces, traditional villages, and lush greenery. It was exhilarating—until it wasn’t. At one point, while navigating a gravelly downhill stretch, I slipped and cut my left foot badly. The sharp pain was a clear sign that my trekking adventure had come to a sudden halt.

Still, I pushed through to finish the tour, limping along the final leg of the journey. My guide was concerned, but I insisted on completing what I’d started. Once we returned to town, I quickly hailed a taxi back to the hotel, where my real adventure—unfortunately—began.

Hotel to the Rescue: An Unplanned Recovery

As soon as I limped into the hotel, the staff at Hotel de la Coupole sprang into action. The kind receptionist insisted on sending a doctor to check my foot, and before I knew it, a local doctor arrived, cleaned the wound, and bandaged me up. He recommended that I keep my foot elevated and avoid walking for a while.

Though my trekking days were over for this trip, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to recover. The hotel’s hospitality was extraordinary. The staff went out of their way to keep me comfortable, checking in on me regularly, while the in-house nurse visited daily to change my bandages. Despite being stuck in the hotel for the remainder of my stay in Sapa, I never felt bored or restless. The luxurious surroundings, the attentive staff, and even the hotel’s lively atmosphere kept my spirits high.

A Premature Goodbye to Sapa

After three full days of recovery at Hotel de la Coupole, I knew it was time to leave Sapa, despite my disappointment at not being able to explore further. I hopped on another bus back to Hanoi and immediately went to the hospital for further treatment. Thankfully, the injury wasn’t too serious, but it did put a damper on my plans.

Despite the setback, I’m incredibly grateful for the experience. The bus ride was a unique and enjoyable experience, and the staff at Hotel de la Coupole turned what could have been a disastrous trip into a surprisingly pleasant stay. I couldn’t explore Sapa the way I had hoped, but I know I’ll be back—this time, with better shoes and hopefully no falls!

Stay tuned for the next part of my journey, where I continue to explore Vietnam, including my time in Tam Coc!
